Green School Initiative
Scoil Muire agus Treasa has been involved in the Green School Initiative since 2004. We have worked hard on, and continue to work on the various Green School themes. We have been awarded 5 Green Flags to date for the themes:
- Litter and Waste
- Conservation of Energy
- Conservation of Water
- Green Travel
- Biodiversity
While we continue to work on the above 5 themes, we are currently undertaking the 6th theme “Global Citizenship” with emphasis on Litter and Waste.
Our hardworking committee is made up of students, teachers, ancillary staff and parents. Take a look at our Green school photos to see what we have been doing.
Swift Boxes
When we were working on the Green School “Biodiversity Theme”, our committee visited the GMIT in Castlebar to learn about and to watch Swifts as they flew into and out of their nest boxes on the site of the GMIT. We spent an evening in Swinford, observing the skies, in hopes that we might see swifts in our town and we were successful. We discovered three nesting sites in buildings in the town. We also found out that our Junior school is of suitable height to erect nesting boxes where we hope swifts will nest in early summer 2015 or 2016. We have erected two nesting boxes, each has three nesting chambers and we have inserted cameras in these which we hope to live-stream later this year. Now we await the return of the swifts from Africa in May!
