Meeting of Green School Committee

Wednesday, February 8th at 2pm in Artroom

Present at meeting: David Henry, Conor Joyce, Saoirse Breen, Aoibheann Flatley, Fergal Monaghan, Edel Nestor, Rita Campbell, Mairead Monaghan, Marian Thornburgh

  • ·       Minutes from November Meeting were discussed.
  • ·       Map that Padraig Higgins from Council gave us to study and choose a couple of areas that the council could begin work on, we looked at this and decided that the footpath from senior school to corner of Chapel Street needs first priority – to be replaced. The second area we picked was the path on left side of Davitt Terrace , again to be replaced and the third item was to box an area near the bottle and clothes bank in Melletts carpark so that people can drop off the bottles easily. We decided that three items was enough to target at this stage and see how these items get addressed in next few months. Rita will call Padraig and let him know what we have chosen tomorrow.
  • ·       Marian is doing Travel Assessment online and will have it into An Taisce by mid February so we should know if we are to get our 4th flag by the end of March.
  • ·       We talked about the success of our WOW days, the decision by parents to informally introduce a one way system on our road and from this we decided that we will increase our WOW days to 2 per week and see how this system works. The two days we decided upon are Thursday and Friday and this change takes effect from tomorrow , Thursday February 9th. Fergal got Mr Hennigan to announce this over the intercom to all classes. Now the infants were gone home so I wont take a record of results tomorrow, but will on Friday and onwards. This is sure to alleviate the traffic congestion outside our schools both morning and evening. Tuesday February 8th , 89% of our school community travelled in a Green Way to school.
  • ·       We want to conduct a litter blitz on the junior and senior sides and decided that this will take place on Thursday, February 23rd after eleven o’clock break. This involves the Green School Committee and the litter wardens for that week with Mr Hennigan. Edel and Fergal will explain the setup and format to Mr Hennigan and will take charge of this. Also  the committee will conduct a bin audit on the same day after big break and return results to Mrs Thornburgh. results will be posted on the Green School noticeboards that evening.
  • ·       We are going to organise a Cash for Clobber collection for the 23rd/24th April with Liberties  Recycling at €4 per bag. Also this is a genuine charity.
  • ·       Rita is going to call the Secondary School and see  who collected the batteries from them and we will see if we can set up  a direct link with them to collect our batteries here in our school.
  • ·       We talked about the Green School Travel competition and the committee agreed to bring a leaflet back to each class, see if anyone is interested in taking part and we will get back with this as see if we have a number of entries. Maximum number of entries per school is ten
  • ·       We talked about the Comenius Presentation and everyone is going to think about and put down their ideas for the next meeting which we will devote totally to Comenius. This meeting will be on Wednesday February 22nd at 2pm.
